Grades:

6 - 8

Subject:

Math

Duration:

1–2 class periods

Standards
& Goals:

Georgia Performance Standards (GPS – 5 and 6 grade)
M5M2. Students will extend their understanding of perimeter to include circumference: (a) Derive the formula for the circumference of a circle. (b) Find the circumference of a circle using the formula and pi ≈ 3.14.
M6M4. Students will determine the surface area of solid figures.

National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM grades 6–8): Use two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects to visualize and solve problems such as those involving surface area.

Note that standards in this lesson plan are for example only. This lesson can be easily adapted to meet your state’s specific standards.

Objectives:

Students will:

  • Understand that circumference is the perimeter measure for a circle.
  • Understand that surface area is the outside measurement of a sphere and that volume is the inside measurement.
  • Be familiar with exponents (used in formula for surface area).
  • Recognize keywords and symbols used for measurement of circles (pi, diameter, radius, circumference, perimeter, surface area and sphere).
  • Recognize that polygons form a soccer ball: pentagons and hexagons.
