M8A1. Students will use algebra to represent, analyze and solve problems: a. Represent a given situation using algebraic expressions or equations in one variable.

National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM – grades 6–8): Understand patterns, relations and functions. Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols. Use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships.

Objectives:

Students will:

  • Define algebra vocabulary: variable, term, like terms, constant and coefficient and give examples.
  • Solve basic algebraic equations where a value is substituted for the variable x.
