Standards & Goals:	Georgia Performance Standards (GPS – 8th grade) M8A1. Students will use algebra to represent, analyze and solve problems: a. Represent a given situation using algebraic expressions or equations in one variable. National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM – grades 6–8): Understand patterns, relations and functions. Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols. Use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships. Note that standards in this lesson plan are for example only. This lesson can be easily adapted to meet your state’s specific standards.
Objectives:	Students will: Define algebra vocabulary: variable, term, like terms, constant and coefficient and give examples. Solve basic algebraic equations where a value is substituted for the variable x.
