Standard 6.1 U.S. History: America in the World.
All students will acquire the knowledge and skills to think analytically about how past and present interactions of people, cultures and the environment shape the American heritage. Such knowledge and skills enable students to make informed decisions that reflect fundamental rights and core democratic values as productive citizens in local, national, and global communities.
Standard 6.2 World History/Global Studies.
All students will acquire the knowledge and skills to think analytically and systematically about how past interactions of people, cultures, and the environment affect issues across time and cultures. Such knowledge and skills enable students to make informed decisions as socially and ethically responsible world citizens in the 21st century.
New Jersey State Core Curriculum Content Standards/Reading/Language Arts:
3.4: All students will listen actively to information from variety of sources in a variety of situations.
3.2.12.A.2: Define and narrow a problem or research topic.
3.2.12.A.3: Use strategies such as graphic organizers and outlines to plan and write drafts according to the intended message, audience and purpose for writing.
3.2.12.B.5: Write a range of essays and expository pieces across the curriculum, such as persuasive, analytic, critique or position paper, etc.

Objectives:

Students will:
 

  • Read and discuss Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons: The Story of Phillis Wheatley by Ann Rinaldi literally and analytically.
  • Complete a timeline of Phillis Wheatley’s life based upon the events in the novel.
  • Write an essay describing the inequalities and hardships that Wheatley faced as a slave and as a freed African American woman in Colonial America.
  • Understand the opposing views of early American leaders about slavery in America.
