The student will develop the social studies skills citizenship
requires, including the ability to
  • examine and interpret primary and secondary source documents;
  • create and explain maps, diagrams, tables, charts, graphs and spreadsheets;
  • analyze political cartoons, political advertisements, pictures and other graphic media;
  • distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information;
  • review information for accuracy, separating fact from opinion;
  • identify a problem and recommend solutions;
  • select and defend positions in writing, discussion and debate.

Objectives:

Students will:
  • Locate Europe on a world map
  • Locate Berlin on a map of Europe
  • Research the symbols of communism as they are represented in the literature of Peter Sis
  • Create a collage to recreate a map of the different territories in Europe after World War II to show an understanding of Peter Sis’s word choices as symbolism
