New Jersey State Core Curriculum Content Standards/Reading/Language Arts:
Standard 3.4: All students will listen actively to information from variety of sources in a variety of situations.
Standard 3.2.12.A.3: Use strategies such as graphic organizers and outlines to plan and write drafts according to the intended message, audience and purpose for writing.
Standard 3.2.12.B.5: Write a range of essays and expository pieces across the curriculum, such as persuasive, analytic, critique or position paper, etc.

Objectives: |
Students will:
- Read and/or listen to the book Sounder and discuss it literally and analytically.
- Understand the problems and injustices faced by African Americans after the Reconstruction Era and through the mid-20th century.
- Understand the hardships of the African American sharecropper during this time period.
- Complete a graphic organizer by finding examples of injustices and poverty in the novel.
- Write a short essay about an ethical dilemma in the book.
