Georgia Performance Standards (GPS – 5th grade)
M5N1. Students will further develop their understanding of whole numbers:
(a) Classify the set of counting numbers into subsets with distinguishing characteristics (odd/even, prime/composite). (b) Find multiples and factors.
(c) Analyze and use divisibility rules.

National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM – grades 3–5): Describe classes of numbers according to characteristics such as the nature of their factors. (NCTM – grades 6–8): Use factors, multiples, prime factorization and relatively prime numbers to solve problems.

Objectives:

Students will:

  • Understand the difference between composite and prime numbers.
  • Use divisibility rules/strategies to identify multiples of 2, 3, 5 and 7.
  • Know key terms: multiply, factors, divide and multiples.
