Library and Listening Activities

Engage students with your library or media center with these activities and lessons that incorporate listening:

K-2:

• Library Lion listening activity: Using the book Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen, students learn library rules from a lion who roars in the library!
• Clara and the Bookwagon listening activity: A bookwagon comes to Clara's farm, but will Papa let her learn to read? Students will follow Clara and Dad's emotions in the story Clara and the Bookwagon by Nancy Smiler Levinson.
• Library Mouse:  Using the book Library Mouse by Daniel Kirk, students will learn about different types of books and listen to a review of the writing styles of an author in order to tell what place in the library that book would be shelved.

Grades 3 and up:

• Character Portrait:  Using the book Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner or another suitable book, students will independently create a character portrait.
• Mythology Research in the Library:  Students will use research skills to discover new facts about Greek gods.
• Voyage of the Dawn Treader: Students will review what a map is and types of maps, beginning with globes and atlases and then specific map terms: map key and cardinal directions.
• What Do You Know About Fairy Tales?: Students will read, write, listen and speak for critical analysis and evaluation. 
• Circumference in The Librarian Who Measured the Earth by Kathryn Lasky
