The plot is the meaningfulness of the story. It connects the story from beginning to end and provides the characters with a problem or conflict to solve. This graphic organizer helps students to identify the essential components of a story’s plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. |

The plot is the essence of the story. This graphic organizer helps students identify the elements of a story’s plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. It helps students differentiate the parts from the whole and see how the plot flows to create the story’s theme. |
Steps for Use with Audio Books: |
This graphic organizer can be used at any time during the reading process.
- Discuss the elements of a plot with students. Complete a Plot Diagram using a familiar story such as Cinderella (see example).
- Listen to the selected text.
- Fill in the Plot Diagram as a class, in small groups or as individuals.
- If appropriate share Plot Diagrams with the class and discuss.
